In local news, The Appalachian reports that the Cafe Portofino building owners want to demolish the building and replace it with a smaller business building. Cafe Portos, which closed January 11th, is located on Rivers street across from the Ale House. The board of adjustments plan to vote on the approval of the demolition on February 3rd.


In state news, the Winston-Salem Journal reports that a fertilizer factory building caught fire on Monday night. Firefighters are worried that the 600 tons of ammonium nitrate will explode as they battle the flames. Those around a mile away from the factory have been evacuated. The fire chief stated that this fire is one of the most dangerous fires in the city’s history.


In national news, US News reports that the US will send 3,000 troops to Eastern Europe as tensions continue to rise between Ukraine and Russia. 2,000 troops will go to Germany and Poland and 1,000 troops will go to Germany and Romania. The Pentagon also announced that these troop placements are not permanent and are part of a NATO task force if the need should arise.
