Happy World Animal Day

Today, Oct 4 is World Animal Day. In North Carolina, there are 121 species of mammals. 21 of which are state or federally listed as endangered, threatened, or special concern. See Protected Species of North Carolina guide for further information.


North Carolina’s state bird is the cardinal, the dog to represent NC is the Plott Hound, state reptile is an Eastern box turtle, state marsupial is the Virginia opossum, state frog is the Pine Barrens tree frog, the states mammal is the Eastern gray squirrel. and the state horse is the Colonial Spanish Mustang.
