In local news, the Watauga County Historical Society has awarded Dr. Eric Plaag with an honorary hall of fame spot. According to the Watauga Democrat, Plaag was given a spot on the hall of fame due to his efforts in preserving Watauga County’s history. According to the Watauga Democrat, the WCHS inducted 12 people, both living and dead, during their inauguration. Those inducted were nominated and voted on by members of the WCHS as well as the Digital Watauga Project committee. Nominations for the hall of fame for the 2023 inauguration are currently open and will be until the end March.


In state news, a juvenile brought an AR-15 to a high school basketball game in Raleigh. According to WRAL,during a basketball game at Millbrook High School, officers received a call at about 8:40 P.M. Thursday, in regards to a gun on the campus. The young male, who’s age has not yet been released, was immediately taken into custody. The juvenile was not a student of the school, however, the investigation is ongoing. According to WRAL, at least 10 guns have been confiscated at local schools, including Millbrook High School, in just the past month.


In national news, Harvey Weinstein has been charged with an additional 16 more years in prison. According to the Associated Press, the former film producer was charged these additional years Thursday after a jury convicted him for the rape and sexual assault of an Italian actor and model. These years add on to his current 23 year sentence for a similar case back in 2020. With the additional years, it means 70-year-old Weinstein may spend the rest of his life in prison.


Now onto sports.


In App State sports the men's and Women's basketball teams are both in action tonight for their last game of the regular season before heading down to the sunbelt tournament in Pensacola Florida. The men's team travels away to Georgia Southern to play at 7 PM, while the women's team is here at home against ULM at 6:30 PM. App State softball is traveling down to Wilmington North Carolina to participate in the UNCW Tournament. They start to play this afternoon at 2 PM then play two games on Saturday, then two on Sunday. Baseball is also in action as they travel to High Point to take on North Carolina A&T in a three-game series. The first game starts this afternoon at 5 pm followed by a game on Saturday and a game on Sunday.


In professional news, MLB spring training games are starting today. Keeping it local The Atlanta Braves are in action for the first time this season tomorrow at 1:05 PM against the Boston Red Sox. In hockey the Carolina Hurricanes are squaring off tonight against the Ottawa Senators at home at 7 PM. and then finishing up with college baseball a big matchup is happening this afternoon as number 12 North Carolina is traveling to number 11 East Carolina at 5 PM.
