NASCAR Sports Update: Hamlin dominates Dover (8/22/20) By: Josh Scott

Denny Hamlin beat teammate Martin Truex Jr by 1.17 seconds en-route to dominating the Drydene 311 at Dover International Speedway on Saturday. The win was Hamlin's sixth of 2020, 43rd of his career. He joins Kevin Harvick as the only other driver with six wins on the season. The victory was also Hamlin's first at the "Monster Mile" in 29 total starts.

Kyle Busch finished third, followed by Harvick and polesitter Chase Elliott. Clint Bowyer, Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr rounded out the top 10. Austin Dillon finished 15th and led 49 laps in his return from missing last week's race after testing positive for COVID-19 last weekend.

Hamlin also led a race-high 115 laps and claimed victories in both Stage One and Two.

Jimmie Johnson leapfrogged William Byron to overtake the 16th and final spot to qualify for NASCAR's Playoffs. Johnson, the seven-time Cup champion, finished seventh while Byron finished 28th, 3 laps down, due to an ill-handling race car. The two teammates are separated by a mere three points with two races to go before the postseason starts.

The Cup Series finishes out the weekend at the "Monster Mile" with one more 311-miler on Sunday. The green flag drops at 4 p.m. on NBCSN.
