Biden Discusses Concerns over H-1B Visa

By: Eris Lowdermilk

Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate for the 2020 election addressed last week the immense contribution that Indian Americans have made to the United States.

This was related to issues surrounding the H-1B visa, which is a non-immigrant visa that permits various American companies to employ foreign workers in occupations that require conceptual or technical expertise.

On June 23, Trump signed an executive order that would dismiss many different types of visas, specifically work visas for foreigners. Many Indians were upset because over the past five years, about 70% of Indian Americans have received this visa.

There was a protest rally in July, and in response on August 12, some decisions were made in the rules for H-1B, and visa holders were able to enter the country if they were returning to the same jobs they had before the ban.

Biden addressed concerns with the H-1B visa and plans to gain the trust of Indian Americans. Biden also stated that “...the community’s work has powered the economic growth of America and helped create cultural dynamism.”
