In local news, The Watauga Democrat reports that the High Country Cloggers will be joining the bluegrass/hip-hop band Ganstagrass on February 19th on the Doc Watson Stage for Americana Music at the Appalachian Theatre. This is the first time the two groups have performed together. Tickets are going for $30.


In state news, WRAL reports that the North Carolina legislature is planning on unveiling a new Congressional district map on Wednesday. Since the last maps were struck down by the state supreme court, the legislature has been working to create new maps as the 2022 Midterm Elections start to heat up. The state house will be voting on the map on Thursday if the maps pass the committee on Wednesday. If approved, Watauga County will continue to be in the 5th Congressional District.


In national news, ABC News reports that Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin wants school mask mandates to end March 1st. Youngkin issued an amendment that would force school districts to implement new plans regarding masks in schools. Republicans hope to pass the legislation with a simple majority, while Democrats are saying that 4/5ths of the legislature need to support it in order to pass the bill.
