Happy Pride Month! The recent Supreme Court victory on Monday, June 15th for LGBTQ+ rights was a major step for civil rights protecting gay and transgender workers. Supreme Court Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch, a conservative appointed by President Donald Trump, concluded that LGBTQ+ rights are civil rights in the majority he penned. The law protects gay and transgender employees from being discharged from their jobs due to their gender identity. This is a major landmark in the history of LGBTQ+ rights in the United States.
Gorsuch states, "The answer is clear. An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids."(Browning)
Without this Supreme Court ruling, many states throughout the country were able to fire employees based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This achievement for the LGBTQ+ community required years of advocacy. Though this is a breakthrough worthy of celebration, there is still much more to be done in terms of equality for all genders and identities.
