In local news, according to reports from Mountain Times, members of The Appalachian student-run organization received 21 national college media awards at the ACP/CMA College Media Convention for its 2020-2021 year. The award ceremony was held online from October 14 through the 16. The App. State student-run newspaper participated in three college media competitions: the ACP Pacemaker and individual awards, the CMA Pinnacle Awards and the ACP Best in Show Awards.
According to reports from the Associated Press, at least eight people died at Astroworld after crowds surged toward the stage during Travis Scott’s performance. Astroworld 2021 was a sold-out two day music festival in Houston with at least 50,000 people in attendance, it is speculated that even more attended. According to concertgoer accounts, people began surging toward the stage when Scott walked out which made it impossible to move. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of deaths for the victims. At least 300 other people at the festival were injured.
Late Friday evening, an oil tanker truck exploded after colliding with another truck in Sierra Leone. Authorities have confirmed that at least 98 people are dead and dozens were left severely injured during the explosion. According to Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency, both drivers exited their trucks and urged people to stay away from the scene while they worked to address the situation. However, crowds began rushing to the scene to collect the leaking fuel. Dozens have been taken to hospitals to be treated for their burns. Video obtained by the Associated Press shows a large fireball erupting into the night sky as survivors cried out in pain.
