In local news, a former Watauga County Assistant Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator was killed in a car crash on Monday. According to the Watauga Democrat, Jay Kerley was one of the victims in the crash which occurred on U.S. 321 near Phillips Branch Road. According to the Watauga Democrat, A 2008 Ford F250 crossed over the centerline, colliding into Kerley and another vehicle. The victim of the other vehicle was Elizabeth Jane Mille of Blowing Rock, who was transported to the hospital for critical injuries. The driver who collided into the vehicles was identified as Jeremy D. Denney of Sugar Grove. Investigations indicated that alcohol was involved.
In state news, N.C. State University will hold a “wellness day” without classes next week. According to the Charlotte Observer, the wellness day is happening after a series of student suicides on the campus. All classes will be canceled on November 3rd, and professors were advised to extend deadlines for assignments and tests for November 4th.
In national news, Takeoff, a member of the rap trio Migos, was killed. He was 28. According to The Guardian, the rapper was shot in Houston at a bowling alley at around 2:30 A.M. this morning. Takeoff was there playing a game of dice with other member of the trio, Quavo. Takeoff was pronounced dead at the scene, and two other people were also shot and taken to a hospital. Quavo was unharmed.
