Howdy Mountaineers, and welcome to your Thursday afternoon news break! My name is Pruett Norris. Let’s get started.
In local High Country news, the Watauga Democrat is buzzing with anticipation for the High Country Beekeepers’ Bee Festival on Saturday, October 8th! The Bee Fest will be held at Hidden Happiness Bee Farm in Deep Gap, and is running from 9am to 5pm rain or shine. Visitors can expect to see live music, educational programs, a variety of honey and handmade craft vendors, and, of course, bees. Parking is free, so beekeepers and appreciators one and all, buzz on over!
A big deal news update in state tidings, WRAL TechWire in the Triangle reports that Amazon will be hiring 1000 new employees in the region for jobs that average a pay of $19 an hour. The increase in positions comes as the company begins to ramp up sales for the holiday season. The 1000 Triangle jobs are part of 150,000 Amazon hopes to hire for across the country. Best of luck to any of our listeners in the Triangle looking for a seasonal position, and I’m looking forward to the holiday season… but only after Halloween.
Worldwide, NPR reports a mass tragedy has occured in Thailand. A former police officer murdered at least 24 children and 11 adults at a day care center, before killing himself, his wife, and young son when he returned home. This is the worst mass shooting in Thailand since 2020, and another indication of the worldwide trend towards gun-related violence since the turn of the century. On behalf of WASU, my heart goes out to all the victims and their families.
Finally, the weather as ever courtesy of Boone Weather DOT COM. It’s another sunny afternoon on the forecast, with a high of 68 degrees and a low of 45. There is no rain on the forecast through this weekend, so enjoy the week of sun Mountaineers, and I’ll see you on Wednesday.
