In local news, a bioblitz event is occurring this month in Watauga County. According to The Watauga Democrat, a bioblitz is a collaborative event where people “try to record as many species of animals, plants or fungi as possible in a specific geographic area over a predetermined period.” According to the Watauga Democrat, all one needs to do in order to participate is download an app called iNaturalist or upload photos to the iNaturalist website. All findings will automatically be recorded for Watauga County, just as long as it was found in the county and uploaded this month.


In state news, armadillos in North Carolina are out and about! According to WRAL, armadillos are showing up more and more around the state, and experts are trying to see where they are going in North Carolina. According to WRAL, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission wants people who spot a nine-banded armadillo to contact them. If you spot one, the commission encourages people to download the app iNaturalist, and upload a picture of the animal if possible, and include the date, time, and place where it was spotted. Or, you can email armadillo@ncwildlife.org and provide them with the same information.


In national news, a mother is being indicted over her 6-year-old son. According to the Associated Press, on January 6th, a boy shot his first grade teacher with a gun in the classroom. According to the Associated Press, the mother’s attorney said the gun was legally purchased by the mother, and the gun was locked up in the mother’s closet with a trigger lock. The 25-year old mother is being charged with felony child neglect, as well as a misdemeanor charge of endangering a child.


Now onto sports.


Today is a busy day in the world of App State sports, with the Men’s Golf team, Baseball team and Softball team all in action this afternoon. First, the men’s golf team will participate in the Stitch Intercollegiate tournament in Raleigh. The team is coming off a third place finish in the Wofford Invitational tournament in Spartanburg, South Carolina last week. Next, the softball team will play in a doubleheader in Boone today against ETSU. The first game is set to begin at 4pm, while the second game is set to begin at 6:30pm. And finally, the baseball team will play arguably the biggest game of the day, as they are set to take on No. 2 Wake Forest here in Boone at 6pm. Be sure to come out tonight and support your Mountaineer baseball and softball teams!


Finally, a story from the NFL wraps up today’s news. According to ESPN, the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets are still discussing a deal for trading Aaron Rodgers even with a current delay in the process. However, when asked about the trade, Packers president Mark Murphy wouldn’t comment on whether the team is waiting for the Jets to accept their proposal for Rodgers or if it was the other way around.
