In local news, The Appalachian’s Best of Boone 2023 awards are available for viewing! The Best of Boone is an annual readers’ choice issue produced by the staff of The Appalachian that highlights the community from the 2022-2023 academic year. Some of the winners include Stick boy kitchen for best sandwich, rough ridge for best overlook, Thunder Hill for best residence hall and Charlotte for best alumni chapter. This is The Appalachian’s ninth year of producing its special edition.
In state news, North Carolina lawmakers introduced a bill that would require student-athletes to play based on their sex at birth. According to WRAL, the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act was filed in both the House and the Senate earlier this week. The bill says that “a student’s sex shall be recognized based solely on the student’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.” The bill also says that no males can play on women’s teams and no women on men’s teams unless “there is no comparable female team for a particular sport and the sport is not a contact sport.” In the State House, 42 Republicans are currently sponsors of the legislation.
In national news, representatives of the Auschwitz Memorial criticized a WWE promotional video that used images from the Auschwitz concentration camp. According to NPR, The image appeared in a five-minute video introducing a Wrestlemania 39 contest between stars Dominik and Rey Mysterio. The shot was used as b-roll accompanying Dominik’s comments about being a hardened criminal. Representatives of the Auschwitz Memorial criticized the video on Twitter saying, “Exploiting the site that became a symbol of enormous human tragedy is shameless and insults the memory of all the victims of Auschwitz.”

App State softball has a conference game tomorrow night at Georgia Southern. First pitch is at 6pm as the mountaineers try to get their 2nd win in conference play this year, they are 18-15 overall.
App State baseball plays Louisiana tonight at 6pm, its a home game at beaver field, your mountaineer baseball team is coming off of a commanding win against UNC Asheville and they have won 3 of their last 4 games. The winner of this three-game series against Louisiana will sit alone in second in the sun belt.
Men's golf team has a competition in Raleigh on Friday. Good luck to them.
In professional sports news the NHL regular season is winding down and the seeding is becoming more clear and teams fight for the final playoff spots. Twelve teams have already secured a playoff spot but only Boston has locked up the division. The Hurricanes are atop their division by three points with 5 games left. They need 3 wins or New Jersey losses to score the metropolitan division and get the second seed in the East as Boston has already secured the first.
