In local news, one person was found dead after a house fire in Ashe County on Monday. According to the Watauga Democrat, Ashe County Sheriff B. Phil Howell announced the death on Tuesday. Callers reported a house fire at around 9:50 a.m. Identification of the victim and the cause of death are pending an autopsy that will take place at the N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office.
In state news, President Biden kicked off his investing in America tour in Durham on Tuesday. According to WRAL, the President visited Wolfspeed, a semiconductor manufacturer on Cornwallis Road in Durham in an effort to revive American manufacturing. Wolfspeed recently announced a $5 billion investment for its facility which would create 1,800 new jobs and expand its semiconductor capacity. Durham is the first stop in the tour which will include more than 20 states like Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania over the next three weeks.
In international news, at least 39 migrants are dead and 29 are injured following a fire Monday at an immigration processing facility in Mexico. According to NPR, the migrants started the fire in protest, lighting their sleeping mats after learning they were being deported. 68 men from Central and South America were staying at the facility while waiting for requests for asylum to be granted in order to cross the border into the United States. Of the 39 victims in the fire, there were 28 Guatemalans, 13 Hondurans, 12 Venezuelans, 12 Salvadorians, 1 Colombian and 1 Ecuadorian. The fire broke out at 10 p.m.
Now onto sports.
After a thrilling series win against Georgia State, App State baseball will be back in action. They will face off against Queens today at 6pm in Charlotte at Trust Field. The Mountaineers have already swept the Royals in Hickory in the first three games of the season, and they are looking to stay undefeated against them. After that game the Mountaineers are looking to improve their conference record at Louisiana this weekend. The Mountaineers have already won their first two conference series of the year, but Louisiana looks like the best Sun Belt opponent the Mountaineers have faced so far. App State football will have its pro day tomorrow, March 30th, at 9:30 am. A group of former Mountaineers including Cameron Peoples, Nick Hampton, and Steven Jones, will work out to try and impress NFL scouts.
The men’s final four will happen this Saturday, and will include some new teams. UCONN has won national championships before, but Miami, Florida Atlantic, and San Diego State are all set to play in their first final four ever. It looks like it will be an exciting conclusion to the men’s college basketball season.
