In local news, a new traffic pattern has been installed at an intersection that leads to Boone Greenway, Rec Center. According to the Watauga Democrat, this will go into effect today, March 6th, at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Street and Farm Road. Left turns are permitted at this intersection between 4pm and 6pm to protect the safety of drivers and pedestrians, according to the town of Boone. Boone also stated that the new traffic pattern should help improve the flow of traffic on Martin Luther King Jr. Street and the neighborhoods around that area.
In state news, a popular rolling skating rink in Lowell, North Carolina closes on March 5, 2023. According to the Charlotte Observer, this rink has been open for over 40 years, but has decided to shut down, according to the owner, Billy Thompson. Thompson announces on FaceBook, “Announcing the LAST ROLL. After 40+ incredible years at our Lowell Location, it is with heavy hearts that we announce it’s closing.” Thompson discusses the challenges his business has faced, including the forced shut down during COVID. This location will move over to its Hudson rink at Union Road and Hudson Boulevard in Gastonia.
In national news, another Norfolk Southern train derailed in Ohio, on Saturday evening in Springfield, Ohio. According to NPR, It caused 28 cars to slide diagonally across the tracks, but no one was injured, according to several state and local agencies. This crash makes this rail line its second major derailment in just over one month. This brings into question the environmental and public health in nearby East Palestine when a train that was carrying toxic chemicals derailed on February 3rd. However, this car was not carrying any toxic materials and does not pose a threat to the community, officials stated.
