In campus news, App State is named a top producer of Fulbright students and scholars. According to The Appalachian, App State was recognized as one of the top producers of Fulbright US students and scholars, on February 10th. The Fulbright US Scholars program is an academic exchange program, whose goal is quote “to increase mutual understanding and support friendly and peaceful relations between the people of the United States and the people of other countries”. End quote In the last four years, App State has been recognized 3 times as a Fulbright Top Dual Producing Institution. This year, 4 App State graduates and 2 faculty members have received Fulbright grants.
In North Carolina news, Greensboro stabbing sends two to the hospital and a man is charged in the neighborhood attack. According to CBS17, two people were sent to the hospital after an assault in Greensboro. Patrick Cleary is being charged with 2 counts of assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill, according to court records.
In national news, an Arizona driver is in custody after crashing into a bicycling group, killing two. According to NPR, authorities in Phoenix arrested a man in connection with the crash that killed 2 and left 11 injured. Police arrested Pedro Quintana-Lujan in connection with the crash. Quintana-Lujan faces two counts of manslaughter, three counts of aggravated assault, 18 counts of endangerment and two counts of causing serious injury or death by a moving violation.
Now time for sports.
For local App State Sports, today the Baseball and Softball team head to Johnson City for a matchup against East Tennessee State. The Mountaineer Baseball team is hoping to improve their record to an astounding 8-0. The softball team is trying to improve their record to 9-4 after a solid season so far. This game is important for morale as on Friday the softball team will face #9 ranked Tennessee in Knoxville.
Tomorrow the mountaineer women’s basketball team goes to Pensacola Florida to face
Louisiana in the sunbelt women’s basketball championship. Men’s Basketball will also head to Pensacola to face South Alabama on Thursday in the Men’s Basketball Sunbelt Championship Tournament.
For some national news the big story today is Lebron James is out of today’s game
against the Memphis Grizzlies. He suffered a right foot injury on Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks according to Bleacher Report. It will take some teamwork and maybe even a little luck to keep the Lakers in the hunt for the NBA playoffs.
The Commanders have released quarterback Carson Wentz after one season according to AP News. This move however was expected by most experts as Wentz went 2-5 as a starter throwing for only 11 touchdowns vs nine interceptions. At age 30 Wentz faces a very uncertainfuture.
