Governor Roy Cooper Creates New Order to Avoid Evictions

By: Eris Lowdermilk

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper just signed a new executive order that will deter evictions.

Research shows that 300,00-410,000 households in North Carolina are unable to pay rent. This is only a current estimate.

Two weeks ago, Governor Cooper launched a $117 million NC HOPE program, N.C. Housing Opportunities and Prevention of Evictions that assists eligible low-and-moderate income renters facing financial struggles due to the pandemic by making direct payments to landlords as well as utility companies.

This program has received 22,800 eligible applications as of today.

People can apply for help by calling 2-1-1 or going to nc211.org/hope
