In campus news, the Appalachian provides us with a handy guide to the Watauga County candidates for election in this November 8th midterms. A North Carolina Senate seat is up for grabs as Senator Richard Burr finishes his term, and contenders from both major political parties, as well as the Libertarian and Green parties, are vying for the spot. The 5th congressional district is also electing a representative for the House. That voting group comprises of Watauga, Wilkes, Ashe, Alleghany, Caldwell, Burke, Gaston, Cleveland, Alexander and parts of Rutherford County, so whoever winds up in Washington has a direct stake in Boone. We’ll see you all at the polls!

Locally, the Watauga Democrat reports that the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country has unveiled a new mural showing off some of the history of Watauga County. The mural, painted by local artist Brenda Councill, will occupy the second floor of the Theatre, and depicts 5 different moments from Watauga history in 5 different panels. The art is sepia-toned and decked out in silver leaf, both of which are meant to evoke the history the artwork is designed to convey. I’m looking forward to seeing the mural for myself, and learning a bit more about the history of our awesome county!

In national news, everyone’s favorite annual competition has found its victor. That’s right, NPR reports that a winner has been crowned in this year’s edition of Fat Bear Week, a poll organized by Katmai National Park in Alaska to determine which of the park’s bears is the best of the best…and the most massive. Congratulations to Bear 747, who outpaced scandal and every other contender to be the Fat Bear of the Year! Better luck to all other competitors next year.

Now, the weather as ever from Boone Weather DOT COM. We’re looking at some possible showers tonight, breaking our dry streak in Boone, with a high of 63 and a low of 52 today. Have a great one Mountaineers, and stay warm and dry! Now back to your college, your station, your music, 90.5 WASU The App FM.
