In local news, Boone’s Winter Farmers’ Market will host a Queer Farmers’ Day on January 29 from 9 until noon. According to the Watauga Democrat, the event will be a celebration of queer farmers. According to Farmers market organizers, agricultural communities and narratives surrounding agriculture. Frequently, people who identify as LGBTQ+ are excluded from these groups are often targets of discrimination. Queer Farmers’ Day will have a variety of events that will be open to all ages. The market is located at the Watauga Agricultural Conference Center in Boone.


According to the Associated Press, Saturday Night Live comics Colin Jost and Pete Davidson purchased a decommissioned Staten Island Ferry boat with plans of turning it into a nightclub. Jost and Davidson partnered with comedy club owner Paul Italia on Wednesday’s bid on the John F. Kennedy. The boat is a 277-foot ship that shuttled passengers between Manhattan and Staten Island from 1965 until last August. According to Italia, the transformation will cost millions of dollars and will likely not take place anytime soon. The three men purchased the vessel for over 280-thousand dollars.


According to the Associated Press, Australia, along with other countries, have helped deliver aid to Tonga following the devastation from the recent earthquake and tsunami. The first wave of aid was delivered on January 19, once Tonga’s main airport runway had been cleared of ash after the volcanic eruption. Australia has deployed the HMAS Adelaide, a navy ship, equipped with a 40-bed hospital. According to U.S. humanitarian officials, roughly 80-percent of the population in Tonga were impacted by the devastation caused by the earthquake. As of January 22, ships from the United States and Britain were on their way to Tonga to deliver supplies as well.
