In local news, App State has announced that East Residence Hall will be home to new office spaces for professors during renovations to Wey and Edwin Duncan Hall. According to The Appalachian, Wey and Edwin Duncan Hall will undergo significant improvements in spring 2023 and fall 2023 respectively. Both buildings contain labs, classrooms and former office spaces. The target date for moving faculty into East Hall is January 1.
In state news, the North Carolina State Fair is coming to Raleigh on Friday. According to the Daily Tarheel, the fair will kick off at 12pm on Friday and will operate starting at 9am until late in the evening until October. This year's fair is very different from the others with over 40 new foods. These include deep-fried piggy tails, deep fried bacon topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar, turkey legs stuffed with gravy and cranberry sauce and many more. Tickets to the fair are 10 dollars if bought online before October 13 and 13 dollars if bought at the gate.
In national news, President Biden announced an executive order to pardon federal, simple marijuana possession charges for roughly 6,000 Americans. Advocates for the order call this an important first step in reversing decades of uneven drug enforcement that has historically burdened black communities. According to NPR, these are the long term effects of the United States’ war on drugs which was initially intended to rein in the interstate trade of illegal drugs. However, the ultimate outcome was the over policing of Black communities leading to massive arrest rates for accused Black drug users.
