In local news, Beech Mountain TDA votes to give $600,000 toward the Visitor Center Expansion. Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about how much money the TDA would be putting toward this project, and the town eventually discovered that the TDA would fund half of the project, according to Town Manager, Bob Pudney. According to the Watauga Democrat, TDA members Sandy Carr, Kendall Cox, Ben Swadley and Jana Greer were all in favor of funding $600,000, but Mandy Taylor voted against it. Several other members, including Sandy Carr, petitioned for the higher contribution, but they ended up compromising at $600,000.
In state news, a North Carolina woman won the lottery after she said she could. According to the Charlotte Observer, Sherri Burch said she could bankroll one million dollars, so she decided to buy a $10 scratch-off ticket and did exactly what she said she would do. Burch bought her winning ticket at Countryside Food Market in Statesville North Carolina, according to a lottery news release. She beat the odds of 1 in 1.2 million, according to the one million dollar Bankroll ticket game page on NCLottery.com.
In national news, a last-minute problem kept SpaceX rocket astronauts grounded today. According to the Associated Press, four astronauts attempted to launch to the International Space Station for NASA, but the countdown was stopped with just two minutes remaining. There was a problem with the engine ignition system, and not enough time to fix it before
takeoff. SpaceX delayed the launch until at least Thursday, according to officials. Commander Stephen Bowen stated that they will be here waiting and that they are all feeling good about launching off once the problem is solved.
