From around campus, App State men’s basketball announced last night that it would pause all team activities because of four COVID cases in the program. The Appalachian reports three student athletes and one other student involved have tested positive and are recovering in quarantine. The Mountaineers were heading to Atlanta to play Georgia State this weekend, but the matches will be rescheduled because of positive cases in both programs.
In state news, Republican senators in the North Carolina state legislature introduced a bill Feb. 1 that would require school districts to offer at least partial in-person instruction to all public school students. WRAL reports that the bill would still allow parents to choose an online-only option for their children. Current guidance from the governor’s office allows districts to stay fully remote; the bill is up for consideration next Tuesday.
Nationally, the Super Bowl is this weekend, and with that comes a warning against gatherings that could drive larger COVID spikes than the holidays. The New York Times reports that nearly 30% of adults plan to watch the game at a gathering in someone else’s home or a restaurant, and that sporting events have previously driven case increases: Lakers and Dodgers playoff games in Los Angeles sped up the virus surge in southern California.
