A huge tornado, spanning 1.3 miles wide, wreaked havoc on the suburbs of southern Oklahoma City, Monday, May 20th. 24 people have been confirmed dead so far, including 9 children and numerous others injured but these numbers are expected to rise as authorities and citizens continue to dig through the rubble. Peak winds during the tornado reached up to 200 mph destroying about 17 miles of land. Seven of the nine children killed in the Tornado were students at Plaza Towers Elementary School, which unlike the 100 other schools in the area, was NOT equipped with a tornado safe room.
President Obama signed a disaster declaration for Oklahoma, clearing the way for federal aid Tuesday morning. "As a nation, our full focus right now is on the urgent work of rescue, and the hard work of recovery and rebuilding that lies ahead," Obama said at the White House.
